Watching "Mother's Crossing" at the Lumiere Movie Theater
Mother’s Crossing
Director: Lode Desmet
Belgium/France, 2004, 61min
The film ‘Mother’s Crossing’ describes the moving story of an Iranian woman, Sima, and her two daughters fleeing from their violent husband and father to a promising future in Europe. Djouma, the smuggler, helps them on their dangerous journey from Iran, passing through Turkey and finally crossing in a rubber raft the marsh between Turkey and Greece. The documentary contains exclusive footage taken by the smugglers themselves. The film causes ambivalent feelings in its viewers and brings forward a dilemma: while European public usually demands stricter immigration procedures, we would like Sima to find a safe refuge in Europe. What do we then really support—‘Fortress of Europe’ or liberal immigration laws? |

A multi-culti party organized by Studium Generale at the Royal Theatre at the Vrijthof
Cult-Café will be organized on Friday, May 27th to celebrate the 25th anniversery of Studium Generale. To start with there is an improvised comedy-show by three stand-up comedians. Adam Field (GB), Jonas Osmond (US) and Tim Ward (US) form the dynamic trio Without Ties. They bring a unique interactive fast-paced evening of hilarious comedy. They put themselves at the mercy of the audience who are encouraged to call out suggestions for scenes, resulting in sidesplitting laughter.
After this the international students can join the others in the large theatrehall, were they can enjoy the music of singer songwriters Marike Jager and Daniël Versteegh and of musicalstar Fanny Drenthe.
The Dutch band the Goudreinetten will round off the evening. This band will surely make you dance. |
