  Baroness Blackstone, Vice-chancellor of the University of Greenwich.

Baroness Blackstone was appointed Minister of State for the Arts at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport on 11 June 2001. As Minister of State her responsibilities included the arts, crafts, museums and galleries, libraries, architecture and the historic environment, the Royal Estate and the Government Art Collection.
Baroness Blackstone was educated at Ware Grammar School and the London School of Economics. She became a Life Peer in 1987 and since then has been Opposition Spokeswoman in the Lords for Education and Science (1988-92); Treasury (1991-91); Trade and Industry (1992-97) and Principal Opposition spokeswoman for foreign affairs (1992-97). Prior to her appointment as Minister of State for the Arts, she served as Minister of State at the Department for Education and Employment (1997-2001). She was made a Privy Councillor in New Year 2001.

Between 1966 and 1975, she was a lecturer at the LSE and during the Wilson and Callaghan Governments she worked in the Central Policy Review Staff. She was subsequently Professor of Educational Administration at the Institute of Education and then the Deputy Education Officer at the ILEA. From 1987-91 she was Chairwoman of the BBC’s General Advisory Council. She was Master of Birkbeck from 1987-97. She also served as a Board Member of the Royal Opera house (1987-1997) where she was Chairwoman of the Ballet Board (1991-1997) and as a Trustee of the Natural History Museum.

Her special interests include the arts, education, social policy and foreign affairs. She lists her recreations as ballet, opera, cinema, tennis and walking. She has two grown up children and four grandchildren.
