The NVKI was founded in 1981 by 19 enthousiastic AI-researchers. After an energetic start and a short sleep, the association took new initiatives in 1987. This resulted in the organisation of the NAIC Conferences ("Nederlandstalige AI-Conferenties") in 1988 (Amsterdam), in 1989 (Twente), in 1990 (Kerkrade), in 1991 (Amsterdam), in 1992 (Delft), in 1993 (Twente), in 1994 (Amsterdam) in 1995 (Rotterdam), in 1996 (Utrecht), in 1997 (Antwerpen), in 1998 (Amsterdam), in 1999 (Maastricht), in 2000 (Kaatsheuvel), in 2001 (Amsterdam), in 2002 (Leuven), in 2003 (Nijmegen), in 2004 (Groningen), in 2005 (Brussels), in 2006 (Namur), in 2007 (Utrecht), in 2008 (Enschede), in 2009 (Eindhoven), in 2010 (Luxembourg), and in 2011 (Ghent), the organisation of the ECAI (European Conference on Artificial Intelligence), and in the quarterly BNVKI Newsletter. In 1998, the Dutch and the Belgian AI Associations merged, and the association was renamed to BNVKI-AIABN. In 2008, the association welcomed Luxembourg as the third of the Benelux nations, and renamed itself "BNVKI-AIABN: Benelux Association for Artificial Intelligence". Since 2002 (Utrecht), the BNVKI endorses BNAIS, a yearly symposium for (Bachelor and Master-level) AI students.
