In 2007 she started with the two-year research master Cardiovascular Biology and Medicine embedded in the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) and the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM) of Maastricht University.
As a part of her master program she joined the biochemistry group for her senior internship focusing on the discovery of new bio-active compounds through virtual ligand screening and subsequent functional characterisation in both in vitro and in vivo models.
After completion of her master, Karin continued her work in the group as a PhD-student. She is interested in the cytoprotective functions of anticoagulant proteins and the potential protective effect of these proteins on ischemia-reperfusion injury and inflammatory disorders.
In her free time, Karin likes playing football, biking and walking in nature, going to the cinema and spending time with friends/family.
