Kenneth Segers was born on November 19, 1979 in Halle (Belgium). After graduating from the "Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-College" in Halle, he started a training as bio-engineer in 1997 at the Free University of Brussels (VUB, Belgium). This study was completed in 2002, with honours where he received the title of bio-engineer in the cell- and genebiotechnology.

In the following year he started a study into the structure and functions  of the nucleoside hydrolase from  Mycobacterium tuberculosis at the department for Ultrastructure at the VUB.

In February 2004 he moved to the Netherlands where he started as a PhD student in the department of Biochemistry of the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maatricht, at the Maastricht University. Under the supervision of his promotor Prof. Jan Rosing and his copromotor Dr. Gerry Nicolaes he performed fundamental studies into the structure-function relationships of coagulation factor V and of its activating enzymes.
